As a coder, I use Google Chrome daily. Well, basically hourly at this point. So naturally, I like to find shortcuts, hacks, and anything that makes my life easier while browsing. I’m going to list some of the tricks that I use, I hope you find some of these helpful!

Disclaimer: you may have to update your browser to implement some of these tips.

Group your tabs

If you’re anything like me, you have over 100 tabs open at the same time in a bunch of different windows. Of course, I could close some of them, but I keep telling myself that they are all important. To at least keep them organized, I started grouping tabs.

The menu that appears after right-clicking a tab

By right-clicking a tab, you can access the option “Add to new group”. This creates a new group that you can customize by name and colour. Once you have a group you can add and remove tabs from it, move the full group to different windows, and my favourite feature: hide the tabs when they are not in use.

You can manipulate tabs and groups by right-clicking or dragging, creating a user-friendly experience. Using different windows and groups, I’ve created an organized system that (mostly) works for me. I recommend that you try it out if you have many tabs open!

Folders of Bookmarks

Another feature of Chrome that I’ve overused is bookmarking. There are so many pages that are important or cool to me that I want to be saved. There are third-party apps to save and organize websites, which I would use if it wasn’t for bookmark folders.

By right-clicking on one of your bookmarks, you have the option to add a folder with “Add folder …”. This way you can separate your different bookmarks into groups of your choice. Depending on how many bookmarks you have, this feature can significantly improve organization.

Shortcuts

Last but not least, memorizing and using shortcuts can increase your efficiency when using Chrome. Here are some of the shortcuts that I use most often:

  • Ctrl/Cmd-F: Find letter/word on current page
  • Ctrl/Cmd-T: Create and switch to a new tab
  • Ctrl/Cmd-Shift-T: Reopen closed tabs (in the order that they were closed)

There are many more tips and tricks with Chrome, below are some useful pages. If you are interested, I recommend doing some searching of your own, as well.
